I Spent 3 Days Exploring Istanbul With My Family — Here's Everything We'd Do Again
When people think about Istanbul, they often imagine crowded streets, famous landmarks, and endless history. Before visiting with my family, I wondered whether such a busy city would actually be enjoyable with children. After spending three unforgettable days exploring Istanbul together, I can confidently say it exceeded every expectation.
From magnificent palaces and world-famous mosques to relaxing ferry rides across the Bosphorus, Istanbul surprised us with how family-friendly it truly is. There was always something exciting to discover, plenty of green spaces to take a break, and delicious food that everyone enjoyed.
🏛 Day 1 – Discovering the Historic Heart of Istanbul
We started early in Sultanahmet before the crowds arrived. Walking through the square with the Blue Mosque on one side and Hagia Sophia on the other instantly reminded us why Istanbul is one of the world's greatest historical cities.
Our first stop was Hagia Sophia. Even if you've seen photos online, nothing compares to standing beneath its enormous dome in person. The children were fascinated by the scale of the building while we enjoyed learning about its incredible history spanning nearly 1,500 years.
Only a few minutes away, we continued to Topkapi Palace. Exploring the palace gardens, royal courtyards, and treasury felt like stepping into another era. The spacious outdoor areas also made it much easier to visit with kids than we expected.
🚢 Day 2 – Seeing Istanbul From the Water
If there's one activity every family should experience, it's a Bosphorus cruise.
Watching Europe slowly disappear behind us while Asia came into view made everyone stop looking at their phones for a while. It's one of those rare experiences that both adults and children genuinely enjoy.
After trying several cruises, this one became our favorite. The route offered fantastic views of Dolmabahce Palace, Ortaköy Mosque, Rumeli Fortress, and countless waterfront mansions that can only be fully appreciated from the sea.
For families visiting during the warmer months, I highly recommend choosing a morning departure when the weather is cooler and the crowds are smaller.
✨ Day 3 – Palaces, Parks and Relaxing Walks
On our final day we wanted a slower pace, so we visited Dolmabahce Palace.
This palace feels completely different from Topkapi. Instead of traditional Ottoman architecture, you'll discover grand European-style halls, crystal chandeliers, elegant staircases and beautiful waterfront gardens overlooking the Bosphorus.
After the visit we simply walked along the waterfront, enjoyed Turkish tea, watched ferries crossing between continents and let the kids feed the seagulls. Sometimes those simple moments become the best travel memories.
